Ayurveda

Basically naturopathic (see naturopathy) system of medicine widely practised in India and based on principles derived from the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. Hospital treatments and remedial prescriptions tend to be nonspecific and to coordinate holistic therapies for body, mind, and spirit.

In Ayurvedic medicine in India, lavender is used as an antidepressant, while in Tibet it's included in psychiatric formulas.
NCCAM's history parallels that of the ODS: established by Congress in 1998, the center quickly developed a program of research trials that included studies of herbal products used in traditional medical systems such as Indian Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbal medicine.
Like acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine is holistic: it seeks to treat maladies of the body, mind, and spirit through a complex system of herbs, exercise, diet, and special cleansings that even include enemas and purgatives (substances that cause vomiting).
