| In Ayurvedic medicine in India, lavender is used as an antidepressant, while in Tibet it's included in psychiatric formulas. NCCAM's history parallels that of the ODS: established by Congress in 1998, the center quickly developed a program of research trials that included studies of herbal products used in traditional medical systems such as Indian Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. Like acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine is holistic: it seeks to treat maladies of the body, mind, and spirit through a complex system of herbs, exercise, diet, and special cleansings that even include enemas and purgatives (substances that cause vomiting). |
