Azogues

Capital of Cañar province in the Andean sierra of south-central Ecuador; population (2001) 27,900. Azogues occupies a mountainous site (altitude 2,600 m/8,530 ft) some 35 km/22 mi northeast of the city of Cuenca. Mining is conducted here on a small scale, including extraction of mercury (from which the town derives its name). Other industries include the manufacture of Panama hats and pesticide production.
