Azov

City in the Rostov oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, at the northeastern end of the Sea of Azov on the River Don, 7 km/4 mi from its mouth; population (1990) 81,000. The city manufactures agricultural machinery and has textile and fishing industries. It is one of the most ancient cities of the Black Sea region, founded on the site of the Greek colony of Tanais. Azov was seized by the Turks in 1471, and has been Russian since 1774.
