Azuay

Mountainous province in the Andean sierra of south-central Ecuador, lying to the north of Loja province, and extending in the east to the River Santiago, a tributary of the Amazon; area 8,639 sq km/3,336 sq mi; population (1996) 588,014. The province is intersected by fertile valleys with a semi-tropical humid climate. The capital is Cuenca. Local industry involves drinks production, tobacco, dairy produce, fruit canning, textiles, and motor vehicles.
