Bécancour

City in southern Québec, Canada, across from Trois Rivières on the south bank of the St Lawrence River, where the Bécancour River joins it; population (1991) 10,900. There is heavy industry, including a large aluminum plant, and the Gentilly nuclear power plant is here.

Bécancour was settled in 1702 as an agricultural centre. In 1965, 11 rural muncipalities merged to create the present city.
