Bérulle, Pierre de

    0.02 sec.

Bérulle, Pierre de (1575–1629)

French cardinal and statesman. One of the leading figures in the Catholic Counter-Reformation, in 1611 he established the Congregation of the French Oratory in Paris for the study of the Bible and Church history. As statesman he helped arrange the marriage of Henrietta Maria to Charles I of England in 1625.

He was born at Serilly, near Troyes, and educated by the Jesuits at the university of Paris. He led a very active life in Church and state and was made a cardinal and councillor of state in 1627, the same year that he helped to reconcile Louis XIII with his mother, Marie de'Medici.

His writings, including Grandeurs de Jésus 1623, were popular among the French Jansenists.
