Böcklin, Arnold (1827-1901)

Swiss Symbolist painter. His mainly imaginary landscapes have an eerie, dreamlike atmosphere, as in his best-known work, Island of the Dead 1880 (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).

Böcklin was born in Basel. He travelled widely in Europe; he studied in Düsseldorf, Brussels, and Paris, and afterwards lived for some years in Rome. In 1856 he went to Munich, where his first great success, Pan Among the Reeds, was exhibited. This and other mythological pictures gained him a great reputation.
