Büchner, Friedrich Karl Christian Ludwig

    0.04 sec.

Büchner, Friedrich Karl Christian Ludwig (1824–1899)

German physician and philosopher. Büchner was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He studied at Giessen, Strasbourg, Würzburg, and Vienna. In 1852 he became a lecturer at Tübingen, Germany, but the controversy raised by his Kraft und Stoff/Strength and Matter (1855), compelled him to resign and take up a private practice in Darmstadt. His later works include the two-volume Aus Natur und Wissenschaft/From Nature and Science (1862–84) and Die Darwinsche Theorie/Darwin's Theory (1890, 5th ed.). A selection of his essays together with a memoir by his brother was published posthumously as Im Dienste der Wahrheit/In the Service of Truth in 1899.
