Boma

Port in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the estuary of the Congo River, 88 km/55 mi from the Atlantic; population (1991) 246,000. The oldest European settlement in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was a centre of the slave trade, and capital of the Belgian Congo until 1927. Boma is now an important commercial centre.
