Babbitt

Satirical novel 1922 by Sinclair Lewis about a Midwestern businessman obsessed with commerce, clubs, and material values. ‘Babbittry’ came to mean a type of Middle American cultureless innocence.

Thanks to Clifford's careful evocation of Babbittry and jingoism, readers will be intrigued but not surprised to learn that Shanghai briefly supported chapters of the Ku Klux Klan (founded by an American) and a "Shanghai Fascisti" (led by British businessmen).
The cup was of course intended to evoke the image of a street beggar, which is what high-minded PBS would have you think it had been reduced to by appalling congressional Babbittry.
