Babine Lake

Babine Lake

Largest natural lake in British Columbia, Canada; length 150 km/95 mi; width 10 km/6 mi. It is an important spawning ground for salmon and a centre for sport fishing. Since the 1960s Granisle (population (1991) 800), on the northwestern shore, has been a centre for copper mining operations carried out on the shore and on an island in the lake.

Location

The lake is situated in the centre of the province, on the west of the interior plateaus, 180 km/110 mi northwest of Prince George. It drains northwest via the Babine River, which flows into the Skeena River, emptying into the Pacific Ocean near Prince Rupert.
