Tragedy by Euripides, first performed c. 405 BC. Pentheus, king of Thebes, rejects the worship of the god Dionysus yet falls under his spell. He is finally torn to pieces in the mountains by Dionysiac worshippers led by his mother, Agave, who emerges from her frenzy to realize what she has done.
