Bacewicz, Graźyna (1909–1969)

Polish composer and violinist. She taught at Łódź Conservatory 1934–35, moving to Paris in 1945. Although most of her work has been described as neoclassical, her later music also uses avant-garde techniques.

She studied composition at the Warsaw Conservatory under Sikorski and later in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Her fourth string quartet won first prize at the International Competition, Liège, in 1951.

Works

Orchestral

four symphonies (1945–53); seven violin concertos (1937–65); cello concerto; piano concerto; concerto for string orchestra.

Chamber

seven string quartets; two piano quintets; six violin sonatas and various violin pieces.
