Back, George (1796–1878)

English Arctic explorer. He was involved with John Franklin in three polar expeditions 1818–27. In 1833 he commanded in the expedition organized in search of John Ross, during which he discovered Artillery Lake and the Great Fish (now Back) River. In 1836 and 1837 he continued his North American Arctic explorations. He was made admiral 1857.
