Backley, Steve (1969– )

English javelin thrower who in 1990 became the first Briton to break the men's world javelin record. His throw at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 of 89.85 m/295 ft broke the Olympic record until he was overtaken by Czech Republic athlete Jan Zelezny who won his third consecutive Olympic gold.
