Bacolod

Capital of Negros Occidental province on Negros Island in the Philippines; population (2000) 429,100. Bacolod is situated in the largest sugar-growing region of the Philippines, and 35 km/22 mi to the north is one of the largest sugar refineries in the world. Bacolod is the leading producer of ceramics in the Philippines, with the timber industry and tourism also being important. There is a university.
