Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Bacon, Robert (died 1248)

English writer and monk. He was the brother or uncle of the scientist Roger Bacon. Among his works are Liber in sententias Petri Lombardi and Sectiones ordinariae.

Bacon was educated at Oxford and Paris. He joined the Order of Preachers, and is regarded as the first Dominican writer in England. He possibly succeeded Edmund Rich as treasurer of Salisbury cathedral 1233, and his documents promoting the canonization of Rich (St Edmund of Abingdon) were used by Matthew Pius. Bacon rebuked Henry III for his fondness for foreign advisers.
