Bacup

Town in Lancashire, England, 35 km/22 mi north of Manchester. Bacup consists of closely built rows of factories, houses and shops in steep-sided valleys. Its industries are footwear and clothing, and some light engineering. Formerly there was coal mining in the area, and a cotton industry.

Older terraced houses in Bacup, many lacking in amenities and some built into the hillside (‘back-to-earth’), have largely been demolished, and the population of the town has steadily declined since its industrial heyday.
