Badía-y-Leblich, Domingo (1766–1818)

Spanish traveller who studied Arabic and Arab customs. He travelled to Morocco, Cyprus, Egypt, and Arabia disguised as a Muslim and calling himself Ali Bey. He went on a pilgrimage to Mecca, and there managed to perform all the Muslim rites.

He was born in Barcelona, Spain. Before journeying to Mecca he was invited to the court of the sultan of Morocco, where he was held in high esteem. In Paris he published an account of his adventures under the title of Voyages d'Ali Bei en Afrique et en Asie/The Travels of Ali Bey in Africa and Asia.
