Bad Ems

Town and spa in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the River Lahn, 17 km/11 mi south of Koblenz; population (1994) 10,200. The peak years of the spa were 1875-1914.

From here in 1870 Emperor William I sent a communication (the ‘Ems Telegram’) to his chancellor Otto von Bismarck, which precipitated the Franco-Prussian War.
