City and spa for liver and diabetic cures in Hesse, Germany, on the River Fulda, 115 km/71 mi northeast of Wiesbaden; population (1994) 31,200. Textiles, cables, and carpets are manufactured here. Festival plays are held annually in Bad Hersfeld's 11th-century abbey church.
