Chu Ta (c. 1625–c. 1705)

Chinese painter. A member of the Ming imperial family, he became a Buddhist priest and led a solitary life. He painted many landscapes but is better known for his often whimsical portrayals of birds, animals, and plants. His style is remarkable for its simplicity and spontaneity, a bird or leaf being depicted with just a few bold strokes.
