Vadodara

City in Gujarat, west India; population (2001) 1,306,000. Located on the Mumbai–Ahmadabad–Delhi rail link, it is an important industrial centre (metal goods, chemicals, jewellery, textiles, wood, tobacco). There is an oil refinery at nearby Kouali. Until 1947 it was capital of the princely state of Baroda. It has Lakshmi Vilas Palace, Pratap Vilas Palace (now the Railway Staff College), and several multi-level step wells (baoli).
