Baer, Werner

Baer, Werner (1931– )

German-born economist. A specialist in Latin American industrialization and economic growth, Baer emigrated to the USA in 1945. He wrote such works as Industrialization and Economic Development in Brazil (1965) and The Brazilian Economy (1979). A member of the economics faculty of the University of Illinois from 1974, he co-founded a study programme in 1982 designed to train economic policy-makers from developing countries, and he received an award in 2002 for his efforts to attract Latin American students to the university.
