Baffin Bay

Sea passage between North America and Greenland. It is linked to the Atlantic Ocean by the Davis Strait and to the Arctic Ocean by Smith Sound and Lancaster Sound. It is about 1,300 km/809 mi long, with a mean breadth of 450 km/280 mi. It is named after the English explorer William Baffin, who reached it in 1616 while searching for the Northwest Passage; English navigator Robert Bylot had previously visited the bay in 1615. Whales, seals, walrus, and a variety of fish live in the bay, while many birds as well as caribou, Arctic foxes, and polar bears inhabit its shores.
