Bagamoyo

Former seaport and trading settlement in Tanzania, 70 km/43 mi northwest of Dar es Salaam; population (2001 est) 68,000. Before the railways were constructed Bagamoyo was the chief starting point for the interior. It was once the centre of the Arab slave trade. Bagamoyo translates as ‘here we lay down our hearts’.

Sir Richard Burton, John Hanning Speke, H M Stanley, and other explorers set off into the interior from Bagamoyo. In 1873, local people brought the body of David Livingstone to Bagamoyo. The remains were disguised as a bale of merchandise because of local superstitions.
