New Providence

Principal island of the Bahamas in the West Indies; area 150 sq km/58 sq mi; population (2000) 210,800. The island is about 34 km/21 mi long from east to west, and 11 km/7 mi wide from north to south. The island's principal city is Nassau, the capital and chief port of the Bahamas. The local economy centres on agriculture, fishing, rum, and tourism.
