Baia Mare

Industrial town and capital of Maramureş county, northern Romania, 100 km/63 mi north of Cluj Napoca; population (2002) 137,900. Chemicals, metals, machinery, food, and fertilizers are produced. The nearby area is rich in ores containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and uranium.

On January 30, an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of polluted mud and wastewater escaped from a break in the dam of the Baia Mare gold mine in Northwest Romania, and spilled into the adjacent Lapus River.
The tailings dam at Baia Mare ruptured, releasing an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of cyanide-tainted liquid into the watershed that feeds the Danube River.
