Bailey, Edward Batersby (1881–1965)

British geologist who was noted for investigating the geological structure of Scotland. In the course of his work, he discovered and described many new phenomena.

Bailey was on the staff of the Geological Survey and Museum, 1902–29, and was appointed its director, 1937–45. As professor of geology at the University of Glasgow, 1929–37, he specialized in studying Dalradian and Tertiary igneous rocks, and was the first to describe cauldron subsidences and first recumbent folds (or ‘nappes’) in the Scottish Highlands. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1930.
