Bailey bridge

Prefabricated bridge developed by the British Army in World War II; made from a set of standardized components so that bridges of varying lengths and load-carrying ability could be assembled to order.

They were used in every theatre of the war and many remained in place for several years after the war until the civil authorities could replace them with more permanent structures.
