Bainbridge, William

Bainbridge, William (1774–1833)

American naval officer. In the War of 1812 he was appointed commodore, in command of the Constitution, and captured the British frigate Java after a fierce engagement.

Bainbridge was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and entered the merchant marine at 15. In 1798 he was appointed to the command of the schooner Retaliation.
