Bainbridge Island

Island in Puget Sound, Washington, 13 km/8 mi west of Seattle; area 67 sq km/26 sq mi. It has a naval reservation, the Bloedel (botanical) Reserve, and a noted winery, but is principally an affluent residential area.

Once a Kitsap homeland, in the mid- and late 19th century Bainbridge was a seaport and sawmilling and shipbuilding centre. It is now home to many professionals who commute by ferry to Seattle. Winslow (population (1990) 3,100), on the east shore, is the largest community.
