Bairstow, Edward C(uthbert) (1874–1946)

English organist, conductor, and composer. After various posts as organist he took the DMus at Durham University in 1901 and became organist and choirmaster at York Minster in 1913. He edited The English Psalter and wrote The Evolution of Musical Form and (with Plunket Greene) Singing Learnt from Speech. He was professor of music at Durham University 1929–46.
