The 1704 km/1,060 mi long Highway 1 in Baja California, Mexico, leads from Tijuana on the USA border down the west coast to Cabo San Lucas. It passes through the Baja Desert, an arid region of mountains and dry salt lakes.

Baja California

State of northwestern Mexico, occupying the northern part of Baja California peninsula between the Gulf of California and the Pacific; area 70,113 sq km/ 27,071 sq mi; population (2000 est) 2,487,700. Its capital is Mexicali. Cotton, wheat, olives, and vines are cultivated. Industries include fishing, food processing, soap manufacture, and mining for silver, gold, lead, copper, iron ore, and kaolin.

With proximity to US markets and the improvement of communications by road, rail, and air, both economic activity and population in Baja California grew rapidly in the late-20th century.
