Baker

Agricultural and suburban city in southeastern Louisiana, 16 km/10 mi north of Baton Rouge; population (1990) 13,200.

Baker

City and administrative headquarters of Baker County in northeastern Oregon, 76 km/47 mi southeast of La Grande, on the Powder River; population (2000) 9,900. It is a trading centre for the region's grain, dairy products, cattle, and poultry.

It was the site of a gold rush in the early 1860s. Silver, lead, and copper were later discovered in the area, and there are still several mines operating around the city. The Oregon Trail Regional Museum, Baker College (1957), and the headquarters of the Wallowa–Whitman National Forest are here.
