Baker, John Gilbert (1834–1920)

English botanist and director of the Royal Gardens at Kew 1890–99. He published a number of works on botany, including Synopsis Filicum, 1883, Flora of the English Lake District, 1885, Amaryllidaceae, 1888, and Bromelidaceae, 1889.

Baker was born at Guisborough, Yorkshire. He was honoured as Victoria medallist of the Royal Horticultural Society, 1897, and as gold medallist of the Linnean Society, 1899. He was also associate editor of the Journal of Botany.
