Baker, Theodore (1851–1934)

US writer on music. He took his PhD at Leipzig, Germany, with the first major study of US Indian music. He became literary editor of G Schirmer Inc., New York, in 1892, and published A Dictionary of Musical Terms in 1895. His Biographical Dictionary of Musicians was issued in 1900 and remains the leading US music reference book (fifth and sixth editions by Nicolas Slonimsky, 1978; seventh and eighth by Slonimsky and Dennis McIntire, 1984 and 1992).
