Bakewell

Town in Derbyshire, England, on the River Wye, 40 km/25 mi from Derby; population (2001) 4,800. Bakewell is in the scenic surroundings of the Peak District; nearby are the historic stately homes Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House.

There are Saxon remains on Castle Hill near Bakewell; the church of All Saints is mentioned in the Domesday Book; on its southern side stands an 8th-century carved stone cross. Bakewell Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in England. Lead mining was practised from early times, and chert limestone is still worked. There are several 17th-century buildings, including the grammar school dating from 1636.
