Bakony Mountains

Bakony Mountains

Wooded range in Hungary, north of Lake Balaton and southwest of Budapest. It is an outlying section of the eastern Alps, separated from the Carpathian Mountains by the River Danube. The highest point is Köris-hegy (704 m/2,347 ft). The mountains hold mineral resources (bauxite, manganese, coal), and the south-facing slopes are suitable for vineyards. The chief town is the historic Veszprém.
