Bala

Town in Gwynedd, northwest Wales; population (2001) 2,000. Situated at the head of Bala Lake (WelshLlyn Tegid), the town is a market town and a tourist centre within the Snowdonia National Park.

Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales, is about 6.4 km/4 mi long and 1.6 km/1 mi wide. It is known as an international centre for watersports. Situated nearby is Canolfan Tryweryn, the national white-water centre. Other tourist attractions include the Bala Lake narrow-gauge railway, several Roman forts, and the ruined medieval Carndochan Castle.

Bala is also the home of the Urdd Gobaith Cymru's (Welsh League of Youth) youth centre, Glanllyn, and 82% of inhabitants can speak Welsh.
