Baldock

Town in Hertfordshire, England; population (2001) 9,900. It is situated 10 km/6 mi north of Stevenage, on the Great North Road. Industries include the manufacture of hosiery and electrical goods. St Mary's church dates from the 14th century. The town has a number of Georgian buildings. The Wynne's Almshouses date from 1621.

The name Baldock derives from Baghdad, a reminder that the town is built on a site once owned by the Knights Templar.

The innovation of Al Baldock, who used it with huge success at Taft College (CA), it was adopted by Leo Hand in 1984 and he has been dazzling opposing coaches with it ever since.
