Baldovinetti, Alesso (1426-1499)

Italian artist and designer. He was an eminent master of the early Florentine Renaissance, his formative influences being Domenico Veneziano, Fra Angelico, and Andrea del Castagno. His frescoes are in poor condition because of his experiments with various painting media. He was one of the leading mosaicists of his time and also worked in stained glass.

Outstanding works attributed to him are the Virgin and Child (c. 1460, Louvre, Paris), with its beautiful landscape background, and the profile Portrait of a Lady (National Gallery, London). Other works are his Enthroned Virgin and Child with Saints and the Nativity (1460), a large fresco in the cloisters of the SS Annunziata in Florence. He was the master of Domenico Ghirlandaio.
