Baldwin, James Mark

Baldwin, James Mark (1861–1934)

US psychologist who specialized in the fields of evolution, genetics, and sociology. His publications include The Individual and Society, 1910, History of Psychology, 1913, and Genetic Theory of Reality, 1915.

Baldwin was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and educated at Princeton University. He first studied psychology in Leipzig, Germany, and went on to establish experimental psychology laboratories at Toronto and Princeton. He was appointed professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris in 1919.
