Baldwin City

City in eastern central Kansas, 21 km/13 mi southeast of Lawrence; population (1990) 2,900. It was laid out in 1855 and is now a distribution centre for livestock, grain, and dairy products as well as for oil and gas from nearby wells. Baker University was established here in 1858.

Baldwin City was the site of bloody clashes between pro- and antislavery factions before the American Civil War.
