Balikpapan

Port in Indonesia, on the east coast of southern Kalimantan province, Borneo; population (2001 est) 419,200. It is situated in the centre of Indonesia's petroleum-producing area, and industries include oil-refining and timber processing.

In 1942, during World War II, a major naval battle between Japanese and United States forces took place in the nearby Makassar Strait. Balikpapan was occupied by the Japanese from January 1942 to July 1945.

According to the Balikpapan Orangutan Society, "it is estimated that four to five orangutans are killed for every baby reaching the market.
The first was held in Denpasar in January 1990, the second in Bandung in July 1991, the third in Jogjakarta in July 1992, the fourth in Surabaya in August 1993, the fifth in Bukit Tinggi in October 1994, the sixth in Balikpapan in October 1995, and the seventh in Batam in December 1996.
