Balkan Mountains

Range of mountains in central Europe, extending 603 km/377 mi east–west through central Bulgaria from the Black Sea to Serbia, about 25–40 km/16–25 mi in breadth. The highest peak is Mount Botev (2,376 m/7,920 ft). Its chief crossing, the Šipka Pass, runs from Veliko Turnovo south to Kazanlâk.
