ballad opera

An English light operatic entertainment, the fashion for which was set by John Gay's The Beggar's Opera in 1728 and continuing its vogue until the 1760s. The most distinctive feature of its music is that it consists mainly of short songs interspersed with dialogue and that they are not specially composed for the piece, but chosen from popular songs of the day.
