Balleny Islands

Group of volcanic Antarctic islands belonging to New Zealand, explored in 1839 by John Balleny (1770–1843) and H Freeman while on a sealing expedition. There are five islands: Sturge Island, Buckle Island, Borrandaile Island, Young Island, and Row Island. The islands are uninhabited.

The highest point on the islands, Peak Freeman (990 m/3,248 ft above sea level), is on Young Island. Thick fogs are frequent, and navigation is dangerous due to drifting ice. Whales, penguins, seals, and Cape pigeons are numerous on the islands.
