Diaghilev, Sergei Pavlovich (1872–1929)Russian ballet impresario. In 1909 he founded the Ballets Russes/Russian Ballet (headquarters in Monaco), which he directed for 20 years. Through this company he brought Russian ballet to the West, introducing and encouraging a dazzling array of dancers, choreographers, composers, and artists, such as Anna Pavlova, Vaslav Nijinsky, Bronislava Nijinksa, Mikhail Fokine, Léonide Massine, George Balanchine, Igor Stravinsky, Sergey Prokofiev, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. Many of the works he commissioned are now firmly established in the concert repertory, including Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps/The Rite of Spring. How to thank TFD for its existence? | A Ballets Russes dancer/choreographer of the 1930s and '40s. titles for December 1, 2004 to November 27, 2005, led by Rent (thanks to its Thanksgiving holiday opening), Missing the boat and also the million-dollar mark were nonetheless well-received titles including Heights, Cote d'Azur, Beautiful Boxer, The Dying Gaul, and Ballets Russes. If America is now considerably more culturally enlightened than it was seventy years ago, we have the dogged glamour, exquisite artistry, and broad penetration of the Ballets Russes to thank in part for the transformation. |
