tamponade

In medicine, compression of the heart due to the accumulation of fluid within the smooth membrane that surrounds it. The condition is potentially life threatening and it is characterized by tachycardia (increase in heart rate), low blood pressure, and abnormally quiet heart sounds.

In refractory epistaxis, the failure rate of posterior nasal packing, including packing with the use of a balloon tamponade, has been reported to be as high as 52%.
In a similar statement issued in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) along with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) cited the use of the Bakri Postpartum Balloon to illustrate the importance of using balloon tamponade as a primary support tool to treat postpartum hemorrhage.
